Game Hangout · server sizes

How big is a dedicated server?

57 games, one number each, measured from the servers' own download manifests — not copied from a forum post. Whoever hosts downloads this once; everybody else only needs the game.

3 requests per day, one per game.

3 of 57 run in the app today. "request it" puts a game on the list I work down, one request per game per person. A ~ marks a number from the game's own download rather than a Steam manifest.

How we measured

Steam publishes, for every dedicated server, a manifest of what a Windows machine downloads on the public branch. We add those pieces up, using the same tool the app uses to download them — so the number here is the number you would see land on your disk. Where a game has no Steam server (Minecraft, Terraria, Factorio), the number comes from the official download and carries a ~.

Manifest sizes are what arrives before the first start. A server that unpacks itself or generates a world grows from there, and mods come on top. "(in the game)" means the server ships inside the game's own install — if you own the game, there is nothing extra to download. "(Linux)" marks a server that only exists for Linux, so the number is that download. Last rebuilt 2026-09-12; the list grows as we measure more.

What the number means for you

Only the PC that hosts needs the server files. Everybody else needs the game and the app. For the games marked as running in the app, Game Hangout downloads the files, starts the server on the host's PC and opens the tunnel to your friends — no port forwarding, no rented box. For the rest, the request button is not a suggestion box: it is the order I add games in.
